                                                        JOHN STUART MILL

                                                            AUTO-BIOGRAPHY

  • JOHN STUART MILL was born on May 20th, 1806  in London.
  • Believed in no religion
  • He grew up being educated by his father James Mill and received much advice from Jeremy Bentham and Francis Place.
  • He was taught Greek at age three, by age eight he read many top books including Greek and Roman Classics and was taught Latin at eleven he was reading Newton, knew arithmetic and many parts of England's history.
  • Suffered nervous breakdown at age 20
  • Married Harriet Taylor in 1851
  • He retired on a reasonable pension in 1858 because he was depressed after his wife's death
  • Initially wrote book on "utilitariaism" in 1863
  • He died on may 8th, 1873 in france.

                                                            PHILOSOPHIES

1.  THEORY OF LIBERTY

  • He wrote the piece called "on liberty" which  addressed the issue about nature and the limits of power that can be used in one normal society. He developed the harm principle which states that each individual has the the right to act how he or she wants to, as long as they do not harm others human beings.
  • If their actions are self-directed than society shall have no right to intervene even if they are harming themselves.
  • He wrote it because him and his wife's letters were limited in the sense of what they said to each other in these letters
  • This piece sparked the most controversy and the most violent argument of approval and disapproval.
  • He also believed the only way we can coerce one another is in self-defense or to help others from harm. He believed we shall save someone else before yourself.

2.  UTILITERIANISM

  • This is, perhaps, in direct contrast with Bentham's statement that "pushpin is good as and opera" that, if the simple child's game like hopscotch cause more pleasure to more people than a night at a opera house, it is more imperative upon a society to devote more resources to propagating hopscotch than running opera houses.

3.  ECONOMIC PHILOSOPHY

                                                            FAMOUS QOUTES

If all mankind minus one were of the opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.

Ask yourself wether you are happy and cease to be so.

Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.

One person with a belief is equal to a force of 99 who have only interests.

Everyone who receives the protection of society owes a return for the benefit.
