Genocide Darfur Project
WHAT DOES GENOCIDE MEAN
- Genocide is the deliberate destruction in a series of actions to an ethnic, religious, racial, or national group
- Darfur is a genocide in most minds
- The current situation is the government and certain rebel groups have gotten into clashes and have led to additional crimes against humanity
- Since the government and supplied Militia are targeting farmers and certain ethnic/religious groups, this situation is put under the category of a GENOCIDE
HISTORY
- When this wold wide issue became a Genocide, the actual date isn't set but experts conclude the Genocide started in the late 90's
- Farmers and certain Arab ethnic groups are were being attacked by the government and government supported Militia
- Mass murder has been going on for the past few years and along with that the government threw in a couple more things to destroy and break down the Darfurian ethnic groups even more. Here are some examples:
- Since 2000 the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed Militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers of mass murder (Genocide in Darfur, Sudan website)
- Ever since an uprising in 2003 by frustrated and poverty sticken Darfurian rebel groups sceemed an uprising against the Khartoum government
- As civil war uproared in the 90's between the North and the South, the governemnt started to support the Janjaweed Militia instead of non-Arabs, farmers, and other ethnic groups
INTERNATIONAL/REGIONAL REPONSE
- Since Darfur is not a wealthy counrty they aren't a big focus in the world
- They have foughten in many battles with themselves and the world would like those battles with trade to play out before they start associating with Sudan itself
- Sudan has very little economic status so the world pays very little attention to the situation
- The increase of desertification has left agriculture a poor econmoic activity
- Sudan contributes almost nothing to the world so this has left them almost unimportant to the world
- Although there are many anti-genocide groups in the world willing to make a difference. They ask for volunteers, donations, and blogs about your thoughts on genocide.
- Here are some of the groups:
- The Genocide Intervention Network
- The Rebel Yell
- The Christian Science Monitor
- The Save Darfur Coalition
- Neighboring countries are not involve
- United States have groups that speak out against genocide but not much is being accomplished and much more needs to bo done
INVOLVING PEOPLE
- Many characters have been involved with this genocide by most of it runs on the following:
- Sudanese Government supplying the Militia
- Janjaweed Militia
- Aid Workers
- Arabs
- Non-Arabs
- Fur ethnic group
- Zaghawa ethnic group
- Masalit ethnic group
- Peacekeepers
- Sudanese Security Forces
- Government of Chad
- Sudanese Liberation Army
- Sudanese Liberation Movement
- Justice and Equality Movement
AFTERMATH OF GENOCIDE SO FAR
- The genocide in Darfur has taken over 400,000 lives and displaced over 2.5 million people
- Over 250,000 people that were living in Sudan have crossed the border illegally into Chad because of this maddness
- Between January and September of 2008, over 1,200 fatalities were reported
- 79% of civilian deaths have been caused by the Sudanese government and Janjaweed Militia
- Of all fatalities over this genocide civilians account for between 65%-75%
- 70% of civilians die by "one-sided attacks"
LESSONS LEARNED
- Everyone in this world will admit genocide is a terriable thing, but somethings others can't control
- Other thrid world countries are giving their people more rights so the country will have less uprisings like Darfur
- Many peace conferences have been held in order to obtain "stability" but nothing is ever obtained from them
- The peace conferences are pretty much check-ups but not much is being done
AREAS OF CONTROVERSY
- Most will agree this is a genocide but others are not so convinced
- The Moon of Alabama Genocide project agrees that Darfur is not a genocide and the aftermath is not accurate of properly stated
- Dispute still continues today
- Fighting between government and rebel groups is a daily thing in Darfur
- Civilians still remain the victoms of the violence
- Government denies the fact that they are supplying the Militias and are even part of this genocide
